What it is
The London-New York overlap is the four-hour window each trading day when both the London and New York sessions are simultaneously open — from 13:00 to 17:00 UTC (08:00–12:00 EST). This is the most liquid, most active, and typically the most volatile period in the entire forex trading day.
During this overlap, traders from two of the world's largest financial centres are simultaneously active. Volume can be two to three times higher than during the Asian session alone, spreads are at their tightest, and most major daily price moves develop or complete during this window.
Why it matters
The concentration of activity during the overlap has important practical consequences:
- Tightest spreads: Maximum liquidity = minimum spread cost. For cost-sensitive strategies, this window offers the best execution conditions.
- Most news events: US economic data (NFP, CPI, retail sales) releases at 13:30 UTC — right at the start of the overlap. This combines with European data already released during the London morning.
- Trend development: Many of the day's major trends begin or accelerate during the overlap as New York traders react to European market developments and news.
- Best technical signals: High volume makes technical levels (support, resistance, breakouts) more reliable because more participants are acting on the same signals.
For EA trading
Many EAs are specifically configured to be active during the overlap. Scalping and short-term EAs particularly benefit from the tight spreads and high liquidity. However, the overlap also carries the highest news-event risk — the NFP, for example, falls squarely in this window. EAs with news filters typically allow trading during the overlap but pause around specific high-impact releases.
Common misconceptions
- More volatility during the overlap isn't always beneficial. Higher volatility during news events can cause slippage, stop loss hunting, and unpredictable spread widening. The overlap is the best and worst time for EA trading, depending on the specific strategy and news schedule.
- The overlap shifts with daylight saving. When the US goes to standard time in November, the overlap shifts to 14:00–18:00 UTC. When the UK changes clocks, it shifts similarly. Most EAs should use UTC times with awareness of these seasonal shifts.
