What is a forex broker?

What it is

A forex broker is a company that provides you with access to the currency markets. Without a broker, you cannot trade forex — you need a regulated intermediary to hold your funds, execute your orders, and connect you to the global currency market.

When you open a broker account, deposit funds, and place a trade, the broker is handling every step of that process. They provide the trading platform, maintain the connection to liquidity providers, and keep records of everything you do.

How it works

Brokers make money primarily from the spread — the difference between the buy and sell price on every trade. On a raw spread account, they charge a separate commission per lot instead. Either way, every trade you make generates revenue for the broker regardless of whether you win or lose.

Types of broker

  • Market maker: The broker takes the other side of your trade internally. They profit when you lose. This creates a conflict of interest, though regulated market makers are not allowed to manipulate prices.
  • STP (Straight Through Processing): Your orders pass directly to external liquidity providers. The broker doesn't take the other side — they just pass it through and take a spread or commission.
  • ECN (Electronic Communication Network): Your orders go directly into a pool of liquidity from banks and other participants. Tightest spreads, usually with a per-lot commission. Best for active and automated traders.

Why it matters

Your choice of broker affects your trading costs, execution quality, and the safety of your funds. A regulated broker with tight spreads and fast execution gives your EA the best chance of performing close to its backtest results. An unregulated broker with wide spreads and slow execution can make a profitable strategy appear unprofitable.

Common misconceptions

  • A broker is not a trading platform. MetaTrader 4 and 5 are platforms — software made by MetaQuotes. Brokers license these platforms and provide the server connection. The platform and the broker are separate things.
  • All brokers are not equal. Regulation, spreads, execution speed, fund protection, and support quality vary enormously. Choosing on spread alone ignores important safety and execution factors.
  • Offshore brokers offering 1:2000 leverage are not necessarily better. Higher leverage increases risk dramatically. UK and EU regulated brokers cap retail leverage at 1:30 for major pairs for a reason.
