What is cTrader?

What it is

cTrader is a trading platform developed by Spotware Systems as an alternative to MetaTrader. It is particularly popular with ECN brokers because it was designed from the ground up for transparency and Level 2 market depth. Like MetaTrader, it supports automated trading — but uses its own language called cAlgo (C#-based) rather than MQL.

How it differs from MetaTrader

  • Interface: cTrader has a cleaner, more modern interface than MT4. Many traders find it more intuitive for manual trading.
  • Level 2 depth: cTrader shows full market depth — the order book showing bids and asks at different price levels. MT4 does not show this natively.
  • Programming language: Automated strategies (cBots) are written in C# using cAlgo — a much more widely used general-purpose language than MQL. Developers familiar with C# can build for cTrader more easily than learning MQL4/5.
  • Transparency: cTrader was specifically designed for ECN trading — it shows execution quality statistics, including slippage and fill rates, that MetaTrader does not.

Why it matters

If your broker uses cTrader rather than MetaTrader, your automated strategies must be written in cAlgo — not MQL4 or MQL5. The platforms are not interchangeable. Most commercially available retail EAs target MetaTrader, so the EA ecosystem for cTrader is smaller — though growing.

Common misconceptions

  • cTrader is not a broker. It is a platform, in the same way MetaTrader is a platform. Pepperstone, IC Markets, and others offer cTrader as an alternative to MetaTrader.
  • cBots (cTrader EAs) are not the same as Expert Advisors. They serve the same purpose but are written in a completely different language and cannot be ported to MetaTrader without a full rewrite.

The Karnek note
