What it is
KYC stands for Know Your Customer. It is the process by which regulated financial companies verify the identity and circumstances of their clients before providing financial services. Every regulated forex broker is legally required to complete KYC verification before you can deposit funds or trade.
KYC is not unique to forex — banks, investment platforms, and payment providers all do it. It's a regulatory requirement designed to prevent money laundering, fraud, and terrorist financing.
What you'll need to provide
- Proof of identity: Passport, driving licence, or national ID card — a clear photo or scan of a valid, unexpired document
- Proof of address: A utility bill, bank statement, or official letter dated within the last three months showing your name and home address
- Source of funds (sometimes): For larger accounts or deposits, the broker may ask how you obtained the funds — employment, savings, investment proceeds, etc.
How the process works
- Open your broker account online — takes 10–15 minutes
- Upload your identity and address documents through the broker's secure portal
- Wait for verification — typically 1–3 business days, sometimes hours with automated verification
- Receive email confirmation that your account is verified and active
- Deposit funds and begin trading
Why it matters
You cannot legally trade with a regulated broker without completing KYC. Attempting to bypass it or provide false documents is illegal. The good news is that the process is straightforward and most brokers now use automated systems that verify identity in minutes.
Common misconceptions
- KYC is not optional with regulated brokers. If a broker lets you deposit and trade without any identity verification, that is itself a red flag — they may not be properly regulated.
- Your documents are stored securely. Regulated brokers are subject to strict data protection laws (GDPR in the UK/EU) regarding how they store and handle your personal data.
